The Child Booster Seat and Coming Changes: Booster Seat Law
The child booster seat is an important part of children’s car safety. Toddler booster seat changes are coming.
When the latest report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) came out in March 2011, it signaled changes coming in car seat guidelines. Booster seat law will certainly be affected by the report.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Report
The AAP report recommended youngsters be rear facing until they were at least 2 years old.
The other part of the report stated that children should be in a booster seat until they reached the height of 4 foot 9 inches.
You can bet this will result in groans from the 8-12 year olds affected as the kids probably thought they were done with car seats. The manufacturers are moving faster than the AAP and definitely faster than lawmakers.
The Modern Child Booster Seat
Booster seats that fit a youngster up to 100 pounds have been on the market for a while. Some of the best convertible car seats are designed for use from 5-70 pounds now.
Changes in booster seat law will come soon in many states. When the AAP last issued a report on car seats, laws regarding infant and toddler booster seats soon followed in most states.
The Britax Frontier
The Britax Frontier is one of those seats that stand out as a top notch child booster seat. Once your child is out of the rear facing infant seat, the Frontier is a forward facing and then a booster seat. The company states this seat is designed for children from 25-125 pounds.
When Britax says it’s the last car seat you’ll need, they mean it. The competition will undoubtedly become fierce now that the AAP recommendations have come out.
The AAP report combined with stricter booster seat laws will put the car seat companies on alert to manufacture even better and longer lasting seats.
A Seat That Lasts for Years
The result is safer seats that are designed to convert and adjust as your child grows. This certainly is an improvement over having to buy a new car seat every year or two as a youngster puts on weight.
There are many good toddler booster seats on the market, but I really like the Britax Frontier. It has 170 reviews on Amazon with mostly raves.
The fact is that the AAP report simply repeated what many child safety experts have been saying for a long time. Their contention has been that until a child reaches a certain minimum height, being in a regular seat belt can result in possible fatal abdominal damage in the event of a crash.
The answer is to make sure your child is seated higher and that’s what a booster seat is designed to do. Do not be in a rush to put your child in a forward facing car seat or to throw away the booster seat and buckle them up.
